March Theme:  Economics

Shopping and Spending in our Community

Unique Learning: Wants & Needs (CS4):  A switch accessible activity to give students the opportunity to think about their wants versus their needs. Students pick an item from the toolbar to place inside either the wants or needs bubble.  We're talking about needs (gotta have 'em!) and wants (fun stuff!). Our kids are really getting the hang of this complex concept! An activity to correspond to the Unique Curriculum March 2009 Unit. www.uniquelearning.com. Symbolstix are copyrighted property.

Unique Learning: I Buy (CS4):  An errorless writing activity that allows students to select items to buy from McDonald's and Wal-Mart. An add-on activity to the article reading for this month's Unique Learning curriculum (www.uniquelearning.com). We're using this activity to promote word pairing in sentences, and comparing and contrasting in the real world.

Easy Writing Community (CS3):  A simple writing activity with real photos of common community places. Students can write a 3 part sentence selecting a community place and the item you might buy there. "At ___" + "I buy" + ___. Requires understanding of association between places and the items sold there. A companion activity to the In My Community Series

Community Quiz (CS3):  A find the picture quiz using photos of popular places in the community. Fun sound effects and great photos! One of a 3-part Community Theme set uploaded to the Activity Share.

Easy Writing Community Errorless (CS3):  Simple, switch-accessible, errorless writing about places we like to go in our community. Created for a new auditory scanner, this is a very simple writing activity which is easily used in dedicated scanning mode. Places are represented by photographs.

In My Community (CS3):  A click through story about places in our community. Great photos of popular places- McDonald's, Burger King, Walmart and more. Includes a movie file of the drive thru at McDs!

Classroom Suite activities (CS) require you to own Classroom Suite from Intellitools. Classroom Suite  from either Dunamis Inc  or Intellitools.com.

To use the activities from our website, click on the screenshot, select "save" on the popup and save the activity file somewhere on your computer (I recommend the desktop so you don't forget where you put it!).  Do not unzip the file.  Open Classroom Suite and click on "import."  Browse for the activity (on your desktop) and double click it.  Classroom Suite will do the rest of the work for you.

Boardmaker files (BM) also require you to own Boardmaker software.  Basic Boardmaker will allow you to print and use the BM6 activities above.  To access the interactive boards you need either Boardmaker/SDPro, Boardmaker Plus or  Boardmaker Plus Player.  Boardmaker Plus Player is now available for a limited time for $99.00.  "Boardmaker Plus Player is a new product from Mayer-Johnson that allows you to easily deliver adapted curriculum to the students who can benefit from it. By purchasing a copy of Boardmaker Plus Player for each of the computers in your classroom and media center, you allow every student to use the activities you create. Parents can purchase Boardmaker Plus Player and teacher created activities can go home so that parents can work with their children on their home computer." Boardmaker is an unbeatable tool for creating visual schedules, communication boards, recipes, worksheets and more.

Clicker 5 (C5) activities also require you to own the original software.  Clicker 5 and related products can be purchased from Dunamis Inc or at www.cricksoft.com/us.

To use the activities on our website, click on the screenshot.  You will be asked whether you want to open or save the file.  I suggest you save it to your My Boards folder.  When you're ready to look at your board, open Boardmaker, select "Open a saved board" and browse for your board.
