What's New?

It's been a fun month at DTA with our new therapists, Jessica and Kate; and new patients: Allie, Isaiah, Gracie, Brianna, Ethan, Morgan and Avery!  Welcome to Everyone!

North Georgia State Fair is once again hosting a special needs night on September 23rd from 4-7 pm.  Free admission, rides and dinner are offered on a first-come, first serve basis.  See details on the Bulletin Board.

Atlanta Soccer Academy-hosts TOPSoccer program. This impressive soccer team welcomes children with many different special needs, including Autism, Down Syndrome and global delays, ages 4 to 11 years old.  TOPSoccer begins September 15 at 5:45 PM. More information on the Bulletin Board.

Toddlers Project at Georgia State!:  Mary Ann Romski and the team at Georgia State have launched a research project looking at language development in toddlers with developmental disabilities.  They appear to be considering augmented language (AAC) approaches.  They are accepting participants through February 2011.  More information is shared on the Bulletin Board.

Computer Based Communication Devices have opened up so many doors for our non-speaking patients to interact with their community.  Ron Steinberg, Dynavox sales representative, shared several downloadable text readers with us this month for read-aloud internet options for our struggling readers.  Here are some options:

CLiCk, Speak

CLiCk, Speak is an open source, freely available extension for the Firefox web browser. It is part of the CLC-4-TTS Suite of products, it features a mouse driven interface, and it reads web pages - hence its name.

Free Natural Reader 6.5:  Natural Reader software is a text to speech program that converts any text into spoken words. It lets you listen to text instead of only visually reading on screen! Just one click, you can have your computer speak any text aloud in a clear, natural sounding human voice.

PowerTalk 1.2.10:  Automatic speech for PowerPoint presentations.
PowerTalk is a free program that automatically speaks any presentation or slide show running in Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows.

Word Talk is free plug-in toolbar for MS Word that can read any word document with highlighting. It is found at http://www.wordtalk.org.uk/

September News about our Friends:

Jillian is our "Super Star Communicator of the Month" for September!

Jillian is one of our new little girls who has grown by leaps and bounds this summer!  Jillian has just started talking this Spring.  She uses her M3 communication device to help her share her thoughts when she doesn't quite have enough words.  A sharp little cookie, Jillian is starting to put words together and stealing everyone's heart.  Way to go, Jillie!!

Monthly Resource Spotlight!

Adina found us the coolest web browser for kids on the planet!  This is a web browser designed specifically to help children safely interact with all the amazing content the internet has to offer, without bumping into the less than amazing adult-only information. ZAC Browser was designed with autism in mind but we're finding it's great for all kids.  Parents/teachers help log children on to ZAC Browser and children can't log out without your help!   To download this FREE browser click here:

My goal for the website is to provide new materials and updated information monthly.  Keep checking back to see  what's new and let me know if you have specific needs we can assist with!
