Directions for Use
Use this ABC December Fun book during whole group, small group, or individual instruction to support alphabet knowledge, vocabulary, and phonological awareness, important parts of emergent literacy development. Read the book repeatedly so students have many opportunities to connect letters, sounds, and meaningful winter and holiday-related vocabulary.
As you read each page, point to the letter, say the letter name, read the word, and emphasize the beginning sound when appropriate. For example: “B is for baking. Baking starts with /b/.” Talk briefly about the picture and word so students connect letters to familiar December activities, foods, decorations, and experiences.
Students can participate by finding the letter, matching letters, listening for beginning sounds, clapping syllables, or talking about their own winter and family traditions. Keep participation flexible so all students can join through speaking, pointing, choosing, eye gaze, or AAC.
For AAC users, model simple words such as look, like, same, different, winter, fun, and more. Students can also use their AAC keyboard with word prediction to type the first letter or sounds of the vocabulary word and see whether the word or related icon appears in the predictor buttons. Use the SEARCH feature to explore and find holiday and winter vocabulary connected to the book.
