Assessment Tools

Before we can determine appropriate communication supports and tools (AAC) for our students, we have to first understand how they are currently communicating. That's no small task when we consider that most of the students who potentially will benefit from AAC supports, are also ones for whom our traditional standardized tests won't work. Most assessment standardization requires our students to be physically able to speak, respond and attend. It's time to look for MORE THAN A SCORE. We actually want information, not just confirmation that our student's language skills are "Less than 55" in the standardized assessment world. The lessons in this unit give you an introduction to the assessment measures we use to gain information about how our students communicate, and understand their language comprehension, so that we can develop meaningful goals and implementation strategies.
